Justice and Compassion

What is the family of churches known as The Christian and Missionary Alliance in Canada doing in the area of justice and compassion? How are local churches reaching out to the disenfranchised and needy in our communities?

Here is a brief listing of some of the activities. As we become aware of others, they will be added. For further information on each individual project or ministry, contact the listed individual.

Canadian Midwest District
Morden Alliance Church
Morden MB

Caring and Sharing. A cooperative effort amongst Morden churches. Individuals or families in need contact one of the local churches who then refer the individual to Caring and Sharing. A food hamper is prepared and delivered to the family. Costs for the service are covered by the various churches that also provide volunteers to shop for and prepare the hampers.

Prince Albert Alliance Church
Prince Albert, SK

Refugee Family Assistance. The church has undertaken the care for a refugee family of eight arriving in Prince Albert from a refugee camp in Thailand. The church is providing a furnished home and caring for all their needs for three months after which the federal government will take over financial responsibilities for the family. For the entire year the church will assist the family in adjusting to their new home and country, helping them in the ongoing learning curve they will experience.

Rev. Stu Coutts, Associate Pastor

Regina First Nations Alliance Church
Regina, SK

Action Group. We believe talk is cheap and actions speak louder than words. This group seeks to deal with poverty and issues surrounding poverty. The group actively helps by providing finances, paying bills, assisting in moving, finding furniture?whatever it takes to help. Whatever the need is we actively try to meet it. Some examples of those helped: a young mother whose house burned down was provided furniture and clothing and was helped in moving her to a new place; a young couple who both became unemployed were helped when the Action Group paid their gas and power bills so they could get back on their feet; a young mother facing jail time for failure to pay parking fines had her fines paid to help her get back on her feet.

Trailview Alliance
Swift Current, SK

Compassion ministries. Trailview Church provides financial support to both The Salvation Army and the local Family Life Centre. Alliance Women provide meals to needy families. The church provides groceries and gasoline vouchers to families who have serious health issues requiring expensive medication and/or extensive travel to see medical specialists. The church also helps individuals with needs connect with appropriate community resources and agencies.

Yorkton Alliance
Yorkton, SK

The Soup Haven. For nine years the church has been feeding lunch hour meals to children in local public schools. For the first six years, the church bused children from the schools to the church and provided a hot meal. As scheduling conflicts with school lunch periods arose, this no longer became possible. As a result, the church now provides bag lunches to more than 200 children every day during the school year at no cost. For needy families the church also provides emergency food, annual Christmas hampers and once a month hosts a free supper for those families.
